Poem: A Day in Monterey

The briny scent of the kelp beds wafts through Cannery Row
Where the otters delight and the seagulls crow
The waning tides reveal starfish clung to ruins of piers
And clawing crabs disappear as the lapping surf nears
Two lovers walk hand in hand through the bustle of Cannery Row
Where the children run and the parents are too slow
The dusk harkens nightfall and its lively call to arms
For tourists to fall victim to the siren call of libation's charms
Under moonlight the bubbling surf hisses at Cannery Row
Guiding one to slumber as time begins to slow
You'll sleep soundly through the barking sea lion's squalls
Embraced by doting arms until the daylight calls
