Poem: Afar

You would never let me love you
Not in the way I want to
Overwhelmingly and sweetly
So very indiscreetly

I could never replace this longing
With doting or dutiful fawning
Synchronized to every step and move
Like a record stylus in your groove

For years I’ve longed to hold you close
In an intimate, entangled pose
With unrequited adoration
Unrepentant, gorgeous sensation

What a fantasy to be called yours
And pound my surf against your shore
Laying claim to what others can’t
The droves who you consistently enchant

But I’m aware of the cold truth
Such innocent dreaming is the stuff of youth
For the door to your heart is no longer ajar
So I’ll continue to cherish you from afar
